6The changing demographics of total joint arthroplasty recipients in the United States and Ontario from 2001 to 2007
Section snippets
Methods
A cross-sectional study was conducted using administrative health-care databases in Ontario, Canada (population, 12.8 million in 2010), and the US (population, 308.7 million in 2010). The utilisation of THA and TKA in Ontario, Canada and the US for four calendar years (2001, 2003, 2005 and 2007) was determined. For each case, we also extracted the patient's age at the time of surgery (20–49, 50–59, 60–69, 70–79 and ≥80 years of age), and sex. All analyses were stratified by the joint being
Results
The TJA-eligible populations (20 years of age or older) of the US and Ontario for each time period can be found in Table 1. The populations of the US and Ontario increased by 7.1% and 10.2%, respectively, between 2001 and 2007. The rates of THA and TKA in each time period for both areas can be found in Table 2, Table 3, respectively.
Discussion
Our objectives were to assess the rates of primary hip and knee replacement in the US and Ontario, Canada and to examine the underlying age distribution of these populations. While TJA is indicated for end-stage arthritis of the hip and knee, there are no widely accepted guidelines on the timing of arthroplasty relative to the severity of the condition, leading to a degree of latitude for surgeons and patients. The patterns of utilisation indicate that the crude and age- and sex-standardised
